The Genesis NFT: A Reward for LUKSO's Early Supporters


Hey everyone,

We've got some important news to share: Universal Page will no longer support the Base blockchain. This wasn't an easy decision, but we believe it's the right one for us, and we want to be open and honest about why we're making this move.

### Why We Chose Base in the First Place

When we first integrated Base, we were thrilled about the possibilities. We thought that by adding support for another blockchain, we'd make Universal Page more accessible and attract more creators. We envisioned artists minting NFTs 2.0, engaging with a broader ecosystem, and effortlessly moving between LUKSO and Base. We put a lot of time and effort into making this happen—making NFTs 2.0 backwards compatible, building tools for cross-chain Universal Profiles, and creating smooth pathways between Base and LUKSO.

### The Challenges We Encountered

**1. Competing with Base's Smart Wallet**

Not long after we started working on Base, they launched their own Smart Wallet. In many ways, their Smart Wallet directly competes with Universal Profiles, which put us in a tricky spot. We tried to make it work by integrating their Smart Wallet as a controller for a Universal Profile, but we kept the profiles at the heart of our platform. Meaning you still make the transactions with your profile, need funds in your profile to make transactions, and receive the assets in your profile.

But even with these adjustments, it felt like Base wasn't fully behind us. They seemed more interested in projects that put the Smart Wallet front and center. This made the promotional plans fall flat, and we didn't get the visibility we were hoping for in the Base ecosystem.

**2. Lack of Promotional Support**

One big reason we went for Base was to get more exposure. They promised to help promote us with shoutouts and social media posts. But after we launched, those promises didn't come through. It seemed like they preferred to spotlight projects that just focused on using the Smart Wallet directly instead of a project that works with Universal Profiles and is also focussed on LUKSO.

**3. The Reality of Being Bootstrapped**

Supporting Base for our platform isn't cheap, and as a bootstrapped company with very limited resources, we have to be smart about where we spend our resources. Without the traction we expected, continuing to support Base just doesn't make financial sense. We need to focus on what's sustainable for us in the long run.

**4. Questions About Alignment and Community**

We also began to question how well Base's ecosystem aligns with our values around decentralization and open community engagement. While they delivered on the technical side, some things felt off. On the surface, it looks like a lot of exciting things are happening on Base. But when we looked closer, we noticed issues like people being banned from Discord without clear reasons, a lack of true decentralization, and a fragmented community that doesn't feel as cohesive as for example the LUKSO community.

It was also challenging to gain traction as a new project in this space. Platforms like Farcaster often felt bot-driven, and despite many builders on Base, much of the activity we saw involved promoting meme coins and simple projects lacking innovation or utility. We acknowledge that there are great things happening on Base, and we respect how they've grown their ecosystem and attracted so many people. However, we felt the reality didn't quite match the initial impression. This disconnect made us rethink whether Base is the right place to build the kind of open, engaged creator community we envision.

### What This Means for Universal Profiles on Base

If you have a Universal Profile on Base, we recommend that you use the next two weeks to transfer any bridged ETH you still have on your profile to a wallet like Coinbase Wallet, Rabby, Metamask, etc.

Starting November 18, we'll remove Base from our user interface, which will make it harder to manage your Universal Profile on Base. As far as we know, there aren't any other platforms supporting Universal Profiles on Base right now. While your assets on IPFS and the blockchain will still be there, you won't be able to access them easily through our platform anymore.

### Looking Ahead

Our infrastructure is still flexible, and we're open to supporting multiple chains in the future if it makes sense. However, we're planning to focus on LUKSO for now and will be removing Base from our platform. We've learned a lot from this experience, but it has also been a great disappointment for us as we really need the community to grow and thrive in order to survive. Hopefully, the LUKSO community can make a comeback and we can continue to build the best platform we can.

# Universal Page Launches on Base: The Social Platform for Digital Collectibles

Following a successful debut on LUKSO earlier this year, the much-praised NFT marketplace is now available on the fastest-growing blockchain in the ecosystem: Base. With a focus on creators, new smart contract standards, and friendly UX, Universal Page aims to make NFTs great again.

Universal Page, or UPage, offers a comprehensive, no-code launchpad for creators to launch NFT 2.0 drops. These new standards, designed by the creators of the ERC-20 standard, aim to make digital collectibles more powerful and allow creators to build up an onchain reputation.

The platform is built solely on top of Universal Profiles, also called smart profiles, onchain profiles, or simply UPs. They are seen as the most powerful account abstraction solution, which not only makes the use of blockchain apps more user-friendly and safer but also more social. Instead of a "wallet," all users on UPage have their on-chain profile. It serves as their wallet to store digital collectibles and the universal identity they can bring from one app to another.

## Expanding to Base

Expanding Universal Page to Base marks a significant milestone, introducing the platform to millions of active users on Ethereum's L2, created by Coinbase. With a huge user base and fast and cheap transactions, this move will improve the user experience further.

The vision of Base is closely aligned with Universal Page's, as both prioritize user experience and focus on creators. UPage offers users gasless transactions. Users can sign up with their email and make transactions on a mobile phone without needing a browser extension or mobile app. Similarly, on Base, this is also achievable through the smart wallet. A smart wallet can be used to manage a Universal Profile, combining these two powerful new account abstraction technologies.

## Multi-Chain Approach

Universal Page empowers users with a multi-chain approach, allowing them to 'replicate' their profile on another chain. This means the Universal Profile can have the same profile address on both chains. Essentially, it's like creating a 'twin' profile on another chain, which allows users to maintain their identity across different chains, giving them full control over their digital identity.

## Our Multi-Chain Vision

We are excited to share that Universal Page, the social NFT 2.0 platform, is working on going multi-chain and will be adding support for [Base](https://www.base.org/). We always strive to maintain transparency with our community, and in this blog post, we will delve into more detail about our plans and the reasoning behind them.

We always envisioned a multi-chain environment where other ecosystems would adopt the [new NFT standards](https://universal.page/blog/what-are-nfts-2-0-and-which-problems-do-they-solve) and [Universal Profiles](https://universal.page/universal-profiles). We think that vision needs to be realized more quickly than we initially anticipated, and we started working on the technical requirements to make that possible. After researching the best place to expand our platform, we decided to go with Base, the builder-friendly and fastest-growing L2 on Ethereum.

The [LUKSO](https://lukso.network/) ecosystem has lots of potential, but the current rate of adoption is too slow to be sustainable for us. We believe that adding support for Base is a logical next step to attract more people to our beautiful community and communityNFT platform, which will also **bring more attention and activity to LUKSO**.

We are excited to bring our platform to [Base](https://www.base.org/) and expand our reach to grow our community and bring more value to those who love what we've built. ## About tech adoption

**We will continue our commitment to improving the overall blockchain user experience, which we achieve by using Universal Profiles and the new token standards. We will continue to push for adoption of these standards, but there needs to be more awareness and a sense of urgency to make this happen**.

The LSPs are a massive upgrade with a lot of potential; however, even though something is better, it will not guarantee getting the adoption it deserves.

We've seen this pattern throughout the history of software and protocols.

For instance, Betamax was recognized for its superior video quality and durability, yet VHS became the dominant format due to more aggressive licensing strategies. Or NeXTSTEP, an advanced operating system with superior graphics, was outperformed in the market by Windows, which had broader hardware compatibility and aggressive marketing. In protocols, we have seen instances such as SCTP vs. TCP and IPv6 vs. IPv4, where superior technologies did not achieve widespread adoption due to factors such as early adoption and existing infrastructure.

The same is true for smart contract standards. It's important to remember that the superior products, protocols, or standards not always get the adoption they deserve.

If we go back to the most famous smart contract standard developed by [Fabian Vogelsteller](https://x.com/feindura) (along with [Vitalik](https://x.com/VitalikButerin)), the [ERC20 token standard](https://github.com/ethereum/ercs/blob/master/ERCS/erc-20.md), and we see that despite being very minimal it gained enormous adoption. Later, Fabian and a team of engineers spent years developing more sophisticated standards built for the future. These new standards are arguably more mature and flexible than any existing standards in the Ethereum space. This has the potential to change everything. However, without more awareness the standards like ERC-20 and ERC-721 may continue to dominate over the new [LSP7](https://github.com/lukso-network/LIPs/blob/main/LSPs/LSP-7-DigitalAsset.md) & [LSP8](https://github.com/lukso-network/LIPs/blob/main/LSPs/LSP-8-IdentifiableDigitalAsset.md). [Universal Profiles](https://docs.lukso.tech/standards/universal-profile/introduction/) offer a better foundation to build upon than key-based wallets and are the best smart contract-based account system currently available. But to make a real impact, we need adoption and awareness _now_. Without awareness, other standards may become more dominant (even if they are not "better").

## Bringing better blockchain UX to the masses

[Universal Profiles](https://universalprofile.cloud/) allow for seamless blockchain experiences, where users can create a blockchain profile similar to creating a profile on a social platform like Twitter or Facebook. Gas fees are abstracted away, and onboarding becomes genuinely seamless. However, the focus should not be solely on bringing in more "normies". First, we need to ensure that developers, creators, and other crypto-native users in the web3 space know about the new tools and standards. Spreading awareness throughout the crypto ecosystem should be the number one priority to avoid losing the battle of the standards. To spread awareness, we need to bring the technology to bigger ecosystems. It needs to spread out of the LUKSO bubble for it to make a real impact, and the best way to attract more people is to meet them where they are.

We should let crypto users experience a better way of interacting with blockchains. Universal Page has always focused on user experience and making things as seamless as possible for the end user. By going multi-chain, more users can experience signing up with email and creating an onchain profile for collecting, interacting, and building a brand or onchain reputation. Users can mint NFTs by confirming with just a password, without the need for a browser extension, app, or leaving the page. We offer a focus on mobile devices, no gas fees, and a social experience due to profiles being the default instead of keys. Users can customize their page and control their profile in various ways, such as with a wallet, email, or extension. They can seamlessly recover their profile when it gets lost, there is no need to deal with seed phrases or losing private keys, and information is stored onchain for other applications to build upon. Dynamic NFTs can be shown and verified by creators onchain, have onchain royalties settings, and an infinite store of dynamic data attached to them over time. NFT licenses onchain, announcements and updates, tracking access, and any other standards can be developed and be stored onchain.

_To bring the world onchain, we need onchain profiles and new token standards that work well together._ We need flexible account systems that can evolve over time, be extended, build an onchain reputation, act on incoming assets, have any information attached to them, are social, safe, entirely in your control, and onchain.

## Why Base?

We want to introduce a new way of interacting onchain to the world. By bringing this to the fastest-growing ecosystem in the crypto space, [Base](https://www.base.org/), we can enable more people to experience why these standards should succeed and gain more adoption. Base is a place that celebrates builders. Everyone is accepted and welcome to join, and it's the fastest-growing community ever in Web3. Transactions are cheap and fast. It's a secure, low-cost, builder-friendly Ethereum L2 that focuses on bringing the next billion users onchain. We couldn't see a better place to get our platform and expand our reach to grow our community and bring more value to those who love what we've built.

We will continue to focus on improving and building the best social marketplace for the next generation of onchain collectibles. We aim to bring value by providing a seamless user experience and building the features our community wants.

## Continued commitment to LUKSO

While we are excited to expand to Base, we will continue supporting LUKSO like before. **Adding support for Base could attract more people to our platform and bring more attention and activity to LUKSO.**

**Simplified Onboarding:** We're making it easy for Base users to discover and purchase NFTs on LUKSO, potentially boosting activity and interest in the LUKSO ecosystem. Users who come for Base could get a one-click action to get started on LUKSO.

**New Tools:** We're rolling out features that allow the creation of allowlists based on profiles from other chains. This means creators can create private mints for their LUKSO fans, even if they would launch the NFT on Base.

**Unified Profile:** We're working on having your Universal Profile on both LUKSO and Base with the same address, providing consistency in your identity across ecosystems.
